Now-a-days the parents are prudent enough to plan their retirement life as senior citizens. They secure movable assets and immovable properties and keep them in their possession and title with wishes for disposition by WILL to be effected after their demise or by conditional settlement deed. Further they make provisions for themselves for the source of income during the senior-hood without trusting anybody including their own sons and daughters. Thus they lead their seniorhood life peacefully and happily.

However this is in the case of prudent, resourceful and planned parents as stated supra. But in the case of parents who are indigent, unplanned and have transferred their properties without any reservation to their sons and daughters ultimately suffer for their maintenance and survival. They face hardships while their children or relatives start to neglect them having got their properties absolutely. Their welfare becomes a big question and they are just abandoned to die. To alleviate this misery and to protect their interests, the Central Government under constitutional directives enacted the "Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007".

The Act among other things, provides maximum maintenance allowance, ensure their well-being and also timely assistance in the event of natural calamities etc., to senior citizens and parents living separately and in old age homes. The State Government to implement the purposes of this Act, framed rules, constituting committees, conciliation officers, Tribunals and Appellate Tribunal to redress the grievances of the parents and senior citizens.

Thus this book consist of the Act, the Rules framed under the Act by the Government of Tamil Nadu, Notifications and Forms.
